Songwriter Bernie Wayne wrote this song after a visit in the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, Virginia where he met a woman with whom he had a short romance. She wore a blue velvet dress. Wayne gave the song to Ton Bennett.
Del Rey had recorded a cover of "Blue Velvet" for her 2012 H&M Autumn campaign.
