The Rolling Stones – As Tears Go By

"As Tears Go By" was one of Jagger and Richards' first compositions. The story goes that Andrew Loog Oldham locked Jagger and Richards in a kitchen to force them to write a song together, even suggesting what kind of song he wanted: "I want a song with brick walls around it, tall windows and no sex." The result was initially called "As Time Goes By". It was Oldham who replaced "Time" with "Tears". The first recording was by Marianne Faithfull who had a modest hit with it 2 years before the Rolling Stones. Not really a cover, but still...

The name jackalope is a portmanteau of "jackrabbit" (the English name for the real hare) and "antalope", an older spelling of the English word for antelope. The song Creepy Jackalope Eye is by the Supersuckers, who also appear as the backing band in Steve Earle's version.

801 were an English experimental rock supergroup> The band consisted of members of Roxy Music, Quiet Sun and Curved Air. Roxy Music was "on hold" at the time and only 3 live concerts were performed. Eventually there was one studio album and 4 live albums. The music consisted of more or less mutated selections from albums by Manzanera, Eno and Quiet Sun, plus a complete reworking of Lennon-McCartney's "Tomorrow Never Knows" and an eccentric excursion into The Kinks' 1964 hit "You Really Got Me".

It was a remnant of his Ziggy Stardust musicals and was his last single within the glam rock genre. The question is whether Bowie wrote the song entirely himself. His previous partner in music Wayne County had recorded a similar track with Queenage Baby, which, however, was not released.

After the tour, Bowie formed a short-lived band, Arnold Corns, named after the Pink Floyd song "Arnold Layne". The band recorded "Moonage Daydream" at the studios of Radio Luxembourg in London. Bowie later hired openly gay clothing designer Freddie Burretti, for whom he wrote the song, to front the group. Although credited as a singer, Burretti did not appear on either recording. The title is literal, as all 12 songs on the album were written and first recorded by the band Crass. The original Crass footage is totally awesome and impossible to make any better, but the content is strong enough to survive that. Moral rebellion songs are great, people all over the world are singing Bob Marley songs and Bob Dylan songs and Woody Guthrie songs and things like that, there's no reason why they shouldn't be singing Crass songs too, according to Lewis.

Mariee Sioux - Lovesong

The song Lovesong by The Cure dates from a time when I didn’t follow the band that much anymore. Mariee Sioux's version was a kind of eye-opener for me. Pure, beautiful guitar work. It was only later that I found out that the original was from The Cure and I dived into their work again. Nice songs, but the old songs are the best in my opinion.

Paul Weller, a huge Beatles fan, once wrote a letter to Paul McCartney asking if he would like to play in a Beatles supergroup for the Help Album, a record released to raise money for aid in war zones like Bosnia and Herzegovina. Paul McCartney accepted the offer.

Richard is in American often shortened to Dick what makes Richard Cheese into dick cheese (and there by perhaps the King of Bad Taste).

The King is the Northern Irish Elvis Presley impersonator Jim Brown. Brown had no singing ambitions until he sang Suspicious Minds on a karaoke night from his work. The club owner asked him to sing more often, and in the club Brown got in contact with local singer-songwriter and record produces Bap Kennedy.
The King is not your standard Elvis impersonator because he doesn't sing any Elvis song but only songs by others. Here, for example, he tackles the Nirvana original Come as you are.

Het was one of the first Nederbeat groups. They introduced the so-called Popartsound. The lyricsare bizarre especially for these days. They were mostly written by Bob Bouber. In 2002 the Nederbietels from Rotterdam do it all over again with their own version. The 7" has a truly beautiful fold-out sleeve.

From the collector The Music is You (A Tribute to John Denver) comes this song from My Morning Jacket. The band manages to make the song even sadder than it already was in the original version. The record also contains more big names such as Evan Dando, Low and Bonnie Prince Billy.
Denver wrote the song in 1966. It’s best known in the version of the American folk group Peter, Paul & Mary.

There is a lot of discussion about the musicians on the original. Names mentioned are: Allan Holdsworth, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, Clem Cattini and John Paul Jones. In 1990 The Butthole Surfers put the song on their record Pioughd. The vibrato effect, the guitar solos everything completely over the top of course.

Andre 3000 of hip-hop group Outkast accepted Hey Ya! inspired by bands like Ramones and Buzzcocks. Maybe that is also the reason why the punk rock group Supersuckers have covered this song with such pleasure.

Hüsker Dü - Love is all around

The Mary Tyler Moore Show was a sitcom in the 1970s. The theme song was written by Sonnny Curtis and put on single in 1970. Ten years later Curtis released an eponymous LP. Although Joan Jett and the Blackhearts also made a creditable cover of this song, I chose the Hüsker Dü version. They put it on the B-side of their single Makes no Sense at all.

Got the Time is an up tempo song from Joe Jackson's debut album Look Sharp. Although I think the Anthrax version is quite a successful cover, Joe Jackson was not really satisfied with it. To the Huffington Post Jackson said: "I could never quite understand why they were called a “speed metal” band because we played the song about twice as fast as they did."

A beautiful composition by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The first recording of this song was by Chuck Jackson. However, this version remained on the shelf until 1984. In the same year Tommy Hunt records the song. It's not going to be a hit. Only in 1964 it becomes a big hit when Dusty Springfield records it.

Tubeway Army started as a punk band in the late 1970s. After the first guitar-driven songs they switch to synthesizers. The first single from the second record Replica, Down in the Park, is not as successful as Are Friends Electric but turns out to be a real cult hit. Besides Marylin Manson, the song is also covered by Foo Fighters on the deluxe version of the album The Color And The Shape.

Jake Holmes wrote Dazed and Confused for his debut album "The Above Ground Sound" of Jake Holmes, which was released in June 1967. In August 1967 Holmes was the opening act for the English rock band The Yardbirds. They heard and adopted the song and added drums and a guitar solo. By the time The Yardbirds became Led Zeppelin (first The New Yardbirds), Jimmy Page had already credited the song to himself.

One of the strangest, druggiest, most darkly sexual songs ever written - ambitious, beautiful and unforgettable, according to The Daily Telegraph. Lee Hazelwood, who wrote the song, says it has nothing to do with drugs; “I’m not a druggie”.

Richard Cory is a narrative poem written by Edwin Arlington Robinson in 1897. The poem was adapted by the folk duo Simon & Garfunkel. They made their own Richard Cory for the album Sound of Silence. The song was covered by Them, Cuby and the Blizzards, Wings, The Coolies and many more. My favorite version is the version of Angst from the LP The Mending Wall.

Wendy was originally credited to just Brian Wilson but after a lawsuit Mike Love's name was added to the song. It was released on their 1964 album All Summer Long but it was also featured on their EP, Four by The Beach Boys. Wendy also appears on the Descendents album Enjoy. It’s the only cover song in the Descendents catalog. The clip is a part of the movie Scott Pilgrim VS The World.

The Wipers from Portland is a band with a huge cult status and Over the Edge is considered one of their best records. Just like the Mono Men, Hole and Bored! Red Fang also covered the title track. Officially on the self-released Tour EP # 3, later also on the Murder the Mountains (Deluxe Edition).

Operation is one of the first American hardcore songs I heard on Dutch radio and I was blown away. I love the Circle Jerks! The King Khan& BBQ Show recorded the song for their second album "What's for Dinner?”. I think it’s a great cover. The same energy but with only a two-man-show-band.

Although "You Really Got Me" was written by Ray Davies, the song was completely built around a power chord guitar riff played by Dave Davies. The distorted guitar sound was also created by Dave Davies sliced the speaker cone of his Vox AC30. It was the breakthrough hit for the Kinks.
It was the first Van Halen singe. They had a jump start with it.

Police and Thieves was recorded by Junior Marvin at the Black Ark Studio of Lee “Scratch” Perry. In 1976 became an anthem as the Nothing Hill Carnaval ended up in a riot. Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon of The Clash were involved in the riot and inspired them to cover the song.

In 1986 Iggy Pop sang “I’m a Wild One” but the “Real Wild Child” is Johnny O’ Keefe. O’ Keefe recorded the song in 1958 and it’s often said that this was the birth of Australian rock and roll.

O'Keefe and the Dee Jay's played one night in an upstairs venue while an Italian wedding was going on downstairs. Halfway through the evening, both groups came to blows in the men’s toilet and within minutes there was a riot in the streets of Newton, Sidney.
According to Clinton Walker, the Australian writer, this was the inspiration for the song.

This is a personal favorite. Though the album failed in the charts, it has been widely considered to have been highly influential on many other musicians. Ex Lion Tamer is one of my album favorites. Barely 19 years Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote the song Houd Dog. The song was originally recorded by Big Mama Thornton on August 13,1952. Over the years Hound Dog has been recorded more than 250 times. The best-known version is the July 1956 recording by Elvis Presley. There are many covers and so called answer songs by different artists like Rufus Thomas (Bear Cat) and Roy Brown (Mr. Hound Dog's in Town). "Hound Dog" has been at the center of controversies and several lawsuits, including disputes over authorship, royalties, and copyright infringement since 1952.

In 1964 the garage punk band The Novas wrote this song. It was dedicated to Reginald Lisowski a.k.a Crusher Lisowski a.k.a. The Crusher a American professional wrestler. Lead singer Bob Nolan is imitating the raunchy voice of The Crusher and his trademark (the yell at the beginning of the record).
The Cramps covered it on their album Psychedelic Jungle.

The Louvin Brothers started their career in the gospel music. Their songs were heavily influenced by their Baptist faith and warned against sin. Nevertheless, Ira Louvin was notorious for his drinking, womanizing, and volcanic temper. He was married four times; his third wife Faye shot him four times in the chest and twice in the hand after he allegedly tried to strangle her with a telephone cord. Although seriously injured, he survived (wikipedia).
Uncle Tupelo recorded the song for their album "March 16–20, 1992". Peter Buck approached the band after hearing their version of this song performed live.

The songwriting team Holland–Dozier–Holland was responsible for this Motown song. The Supremes were the first to record this song. They were not the first to issue it as a single. That distinction fell to Nella Dodds. As she was climbing the charts Motown quickly released the Supremes version. They reached the number 3 position at the expense of Nella Dodds.
On the EP Uptown Avondale you can hear another Supremes cover; Band of Gold.

In 1964 the Jamaican ska legend Prince Buster wrote the song “One Step Beyond”. It was the B-side for the single “Al Capone”. David Watts was actually a real person. He was gay and showed special interest in brother Dave.
