The Needle and the Damage Done describe the effects of heroin addiction of Neil Youngs friend and Crazy Horse bandmate Danny Whitten. He died of an overdose the same year the song was released. English folk singer Laura Marling recorded the song on a limited edition 7" distributed as a part of the Third Man Records Blue Series.
